CARPENTER ANT

The Carpenter ant (Camponotus spp.) is one of the larger, more easily indentifiable

ants in New York State. They are extremely common and can be found in almost any outdoor area

during the summer months. Unfortunately, Carpenter ants can become a real nuisance in and around structures and the treatment involved in their removal can be extensive.

Here are some Carpenter ant facts:

• Black or dark bodied, depending on exact species
• Workers range from 1/4" to 3/4"
• Nesting indoors and out, they prefer moist wood but have been found in sound wood, insulation, cardboard and other undisturbed areas
• Carpenter ants structurally weaken wood by creating "galleries" which are essentially, cleaned out tunnels that they nest in
• Carpenter ants do NOT eat wood, whereas termites do eat wood
• Eat a wide variety of animal and plant food including insects
• Can be found in attics, window/door frames, soffats, fence posts, tree stumps etc
• Can be brought into the home on firewood

Carpenter ant activity can sometimes be seen in homes even in late February

and early March. This is usually a sign that they have actively nested inside the house and arent simply

foraging for food from the outside.
