BEDBUGS

In case you haven't heard, there is a worldwide bedbug pandemic underway! Bedbugs are becoming an increasingly large pest problem once again.

At one point, it was thought that the bedbug was near extinction but in the last 10 years bedbugs have made a tremendous comeback and some cities are seeing increases of up to 500%

If you suspect you may have bedbugs, call us immediately for a free inspection.

So, how did you get bedbugs? They travel in a wide variety of methods including in furniture, clothing, luggage boxes and material. They may have hitched a ride on your luggage on a recent trip out of town. Hotels, motels, hospitals and hostels are known to harbor bedbug infestations.

If you live in an apartment building or multi-family dwelling there is a potential for greater problems. This is due to the fact that bedbugs can travel from one unit to another. If one unit is treated and the other is not, it may not be long before the treated unit is re infested again.

Bedbugs can also be transmitted on household pets. Please check their bedding too!

Bedbugs hide in most places, particularly the mattress, box spring, bed frame, bedroom furniture, carpeting, baseboards etc.

Bedbugs can travel up to 100 feet to find food but prefer to stay close to the host.

Here are some other bedbug facts:

  • Bedbugs are about the size of an apple seed
  • They do not live on the host but rather take a blood meal and then depart to their nesting area
  • Bedbug bites are very itchy and can be compared to mosquito bites
  • They cannot fly or jump although they can "fall" from one surface to another purposefully.
  • They are not known for transmitting diseases although their bites are usually more than enough for
    the tenant or home owner.
  • Bedbugs are nocturnal and feed at night
  • They can live for up to 18 months without feeding
  • An adult can lay 5 eggs in a day and up to 500 in a lifetime

Beside the obvious fact that people do not like being bitten during their sleep, bedbugs can create human social problems too. Anxiety, distress and insomnia have been reported in many cases.
