THE HOUSE SPARROW

Just like the European Starling, the House Sparrow was introduced to New York City and is now considered

to be the most widely distributed wild bird in the world.

Here are some House Sparrow facts:

• Feed on insects, seeds and grains
• Grows to approximately 6 inches in length
• Can nest in both urban and rural settings
• Lays 5 to 6 eggs at a time and up to 25 in one year

You have likely seen the House Sparrow flying around a grocery store or large hardware store at some point in time. These birds often nest in the signs above doorways leading into stores and plazas .

Due to this, they can become quite a nuisance and a health hazard as their droppings and nesting material can make a storefont unsightly.

It has also been found that the House Sparrow can carry diseases like West Nile Virus.
