FLIES

Due to the tremendous mobility of flies, their capacity to transmit diseases and their relatively

short lifespans, they are considered extremely important pests!

Domestic flies are known to harbor organisms that may carry cholera, typhoid, roundworm, tapeworm,

dysentery, hookworm, pinworm and infantile diarrhea.

Fly control will vary depending on type and location. The common house fly may become

a cause for concern in a hotel or a hospital. A fruit fly (on right) may become a pest in

a bar or restaurant. A cluster fly may be a nuisance in your home.

Here are some Fly facts:

• All true flies have only 1 pair of wings
• Flies go through complete metamorphosis with egg, larval, pupal and adult stages
• Most flies live from between 2 to 6 weeks
• House flies can only ingest liquids and so, solid foods are liquefied with regurgitated saliva
• Black, Deer, Horse and Stable flies all produce irritating bites
• Mosquitos are members of the fly order (Diptera) and carry dengue, yellow fever, malaria and encephalitis
